Bunyoro Kingdom & the people

The Bunyoro Kitatara Kingdom is one of Uganda’s oldest traditional kingdoms, located in western Uganda with its cultural center in Hoima City. It was once the heart of the powerful Kitara Empire. The kingdom is led by the Omukama, currently His Majesty Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, who serves as a cultural and spiritual leader.

Although it no longer has political authority, the kingdom plays a key role in preserving Banyoro culture, traditions, and unity. The Banyoro people speak Runyoro-Rutooro and maintain strong customs through clan systems, music, dance, and royal ceremonies. Important heritage sites, such as the Mparo Royal Tombs, reflect the kingdom’s rich history.

Today, the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom remains a strong symbol of cultural identity, resilience, and historical significance in Uganda.

With Eshande Safari, guests experience more than wildlife, they discover the history, culture, and resilience of the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, an essential part of Uganda’s cultural legacy.
