Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Fort Portal

Visit Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru, one of the most interesting cultural and historical sites in the Fort Portal area of western Uganda. The site is famous for its unique breast-shaped stalactites and the traditional story connected to Nyina Mwiru.

Short History

According to local tradition, Nyina Mwiru was the daughter of Bukuku, a legendary king of the Bachwezi. The story says that Bukuku feared a prophecy that Nyina Mwiru’s son would one day take his throne. He therefore kept her away from men. However, she eventually became pregnant, and her son Ndahura later fulfilled the prophecy and became an important figure in the history and traditions of the Bachwezi.

The cave formations known as the Amabere are traditionally believed to resemble human breasts and are connected to this story.

Visitors can enjoy cultural storytelling, exploring the caves, nature walks, photography, and learning about the traditions and history of the area.
